aahhhh man.

i saw the most incredible show last night. :)

remember me writing about the highlights of some musical discoveries after browsing through a music magazine? i was falling all over the music of basia bulat and owen pallet, aka "final fantasy".

i was determined to get tickets for the three of us: my friend Hope (an architect from work- i ♥ hope! she's from Portland!) and her boyfriend Sebastian. but the show had been sold out and all of the tickets on craigslist had been snapped up super quickly. so we headed down to the venue after having an awesome dinner at Hope and Seb's place (homemade beer & amazing food!)and waited around to see if anyone had extra tickets to sell. a girl had one to sell and so i snapped that up, and then at the last minute the bouncers said that the 8 people outside who didn't have tickets were allowed to come in and see the show. so yay! we all got in!

basia's voice is amazing. here she is in ottawa a few months ago. :)

i'm totally infatuated with her at the moment and can't wait to get the cd. :)

next up was a group called "the great lake swimmers" who i didn't think sounded so hot on myspace, but ended up being incredibly impressed with the singer's vocals. holy. his voice was like... so pure. all of the artists from last night had just the most amazing vocals. it was truly truly an epic show. the swimmers had a really (and i mean Really) slow sound, haha which seriously put Sebastian to sleep. lmao. so i wouldn't have it playing in the stereo 24/7, but it's a really relaxing sound to have in the background so i might have to pick up their cd as well.

and now! the headliner-- OWEN PALLETT (also known as) FINAL FANTASY and holy man! did he ever have the entire crowd in complete and utter rapture. it's just him up there! he gets up there as a solo artist and begins to play a melody or tap a rhythm on the violin or piano and then instantly & effortlessly records this on a loop and then plays this while layering other vocals or other melodies or instruments on top of it, all the while making it incredibly tight and multifaced and BRILLIANT. at some points it's nearly orchestral, at others it's like... well hard to describe. but i profress my ♥ for owen pallett- he had the audience in the palm of his hand. :)

watch this one right to the end- he's not afraid to scream!

and i mean, how can you not love a man who titles his latest cd as "he poos clouds". ? :D

as an overall, i just couldn't help but fall completely in love with basia and owen... they seem like such lovely people and their talent is far beyond magnificant. their music make me blush with pleasure.

xoxo

Wow. After a review like that, I'll definitely have to look out for them!

I'm at school now, and although everybody in the library probably needs a study break, I probably shouldn't bug them by blaring this on my speakers just now.

I'll be back later to check out the vids :)

Ok, I somehow missed the part about you telling us that he loops his violin, and then I watched the video and went "OMG - THAT'S WHAT DAMIEN DOES"

Holy hell, I am now in love with that song... you wouldn't happen to have an mp3, would you?

Oh yeah, I think he's one of the best ;) He's been doing it more and more lately, I'm loving it! I've seen The Frames' violinist do it too...

He starts it around 5:40...

yeah! that thing he's stomping on the floor. same thing as owen. cool! it must have taken owen years to sort it out and get the changing rhythms down. it's unreal what he can do. ^_^

Yeah, Damien's pedal's a DL4 Delay Modeler (or something like that).

I have nothing but respect for musicians who can do this well. It adds such a richness to their sound, and it's amazing how seamless it sounds, eh?

Owen apparently uses a Boss Loop Station footpedal. not that i know what the hell one these things is. but gosh it does magic things.

ooh, you're in luck. here it is! :

(i like the live quality of his voice... the studio version sounds less soft...plus he doesn't scream as well at the end. i really like the rawness of it. ah well. :) i can maybe make an mp3 out of the video tomorrow if i'm lucky, but here's this for now:
