The Sartorialist for Burberry's Art of the Trench
Posted in
London
Recently I had a chance to work on a great project for Burberry.
Over a several month period I was to shoot 100 different people wearing a Burberry trench or Burberry outerwear.
So, during my trips to Venice or Berlin or Toronto I was constantly looking for subjects while still doing my "regular" job for the blog and GQ.
The results of this project were unveiled today at Burberry's new website Art of the Trench.
It is a great site that celebrates the heritage and history of the Burberry trench.
I have to admit that this project is probably my favorite collaboration that I have done with any big brand. I was quite flattered by the total freedom and support I was given by the Burberry team. I know how closely they guard their creative output, so to have such freedom was very liberating. Actually, the only thing they kept requesting was more diversity of the subjects, which I was more than happy to try and find.
Here are just a few of my favorite shots from this project.
Does anyone know of a good store with a lot of variety of dried herbs? Herbs like lavendar, mint, eucalyptus, etc...
I live in Van Nuys, so somewhere semi-nearby would be great :) Thanks!

So, I've been working on this freehand painting of a tree for a few weeks now and I've finally finished it (mostly). I still need to do the bits that extend up onto the ceiling, but I'm in the stage where I step back for a few days and decide where extra foliage (if any) is needed. I'm rather pleased with it..if I do say so myself, so I thought I would share it here..in the saucy place. ;)

Went out tonight to try and distract myself - and also, have some company that didn't involve law school (ugh. I despise the social culture of grad school) or hospitals - but.. it didn't quite work.
Saw Bruce Peninsula and Timber Timber, in a library no less, who were both utterly fantastic. BP especially just knocked it out of the park and made every little hair on the back of my neck stand up. E, I'm sorry if I was a little clingy - you're my favorite person in the whole world too and I needed the hand holding tonight. Though, now I don't even remember if I told you why.
Then went karaoking with a different group and that... was a disaster. I felt fine to begin with, and then, I don't know what happened. The gravity of all this, and the weight of what could actually happen on Monday just hit me. All at once and out of the blue. And provoked by nothing at all! I don't think I'd ever really appreciated the full picture until that moment tonight. So I clammed up and was a complete downer for everyone else. I skipped out on singing The Beatles and Travis. Which only made me feel worse.
We left around 1 and I aimlessly drove around for a little while, put some gas back in my dad's car, came home and cried my eyes out for about an hour. I just.. couldn't stop. My dad was awake and I just lay down on the couch in the family room while he talked to my uncle in Australia (now, it looks like there's an issue with my uncle in Ireland - nothing serious at all, but just.. another thing to worry about). I know, I know, I need to be stronger because he's got a whole different set of things to worry about without worrying about me even more than he normally does. But today I just couldn't.
Sigh. I have this overwhelming need right now for life to have some kind of rhyme or reason. It's all so... inconsequential when everything's just a crapshoot.
And it doesn't help that I'm reading The Book Theif. GOOD GOD, why did no one warn me to read this with tissues in hand? I love it - and I mean absolutely adore it - but.. oh wow, I should have picked something lighter.
Sorry for continuing to rant on here. I... don't know where else to go. There are people I can call - and Amy, you have no idea how much our conversation helped - but.. it's 3:30am. I don't want to wake anyone up right now. And my e-mail person already has two from me to get back to.

me: oof. food coma. fooooood coooomaaaaa. i think i need to play peggle to stay awake.
him: um, actually i was going to play forza.

him: should we play marvel?
me: is that going to be our median?
him: yes.
Note: peggle, forza (car racing), and marvel (ultimate alliance multiplayer - comic book characters) are all xbox games and for a split second i wondered whether or not in time we'd need another tv and xbox.

Thanks everyone for the comments and texts and calls and whatnot. It's been a little crazy lately. But we have a better idea of what's going on now.

So the surgery's scheduled for Monday. And until then, we're just trying to be good company for her and her family. It's really lovely to see everyone put aside their drama and pull together on this. Everyone except for my aunt, but that's.. well, that's an entirely different post. For now, what matters is that we're keeping her spirits up. So if you've got any spare prayers or good thoughts, send them her way.
Between this and school (I had a paper due Friday and on Monday I have a presentation, mid-term and another paper due)... I've been a little offline lately. So I apologize for not being a great commentor.
I know I haven't even put up a TSS recap but.. rest assured it was brilliant. And especially given everything that's happened since, it.. was nice to feel as electrified and alive as only Glen's capable of making you feel. (well, Glen and Damien :P) Love you all.

things i'm loving:

tiny toadstool
i don't think an outfit gets much better than that. wish i could pull it off. the hats in that shop are fantastic.
honey never spoils
a blog started by my friend temma. it's all about old recipes from her grandmother. endearing and lovely.
dear golden vintage
love this shop as well, though she always has such little shoes for sale. hrmph!

i'm also completely drawn towards plaid button down shirts, preferably flannel. i've not worn a button down (aside from a formal one for work) in ages and i kinda miss them. i've been more of a pull-over shirt/sweater type for a long time now. i need to get back into button-downs. i saw this one when z and i wandered about a mall after seeing zombieland the other day.

also loving vintage icelandic/danish styled sweaters. the kinds with all sorts of crazy colors up top in diamond/diagonal patterns. i came extremely close to buying this one from verhext, but didn't. and then someone else bought it.

what to do with bad photos that still have potential? give 'em the 'roid treatment with the poladroid.net program.
yesterday i was quite productive with crochet stuffs, which makes me happy, but i'm not ready to show what i've been making yet. some of it isn't much different than what i've already had in the shop so even when i do show it some people may be "meh" about it, but it makes me happy that i've expanded on some things and they've worked out to my liking.

If you are maybe curious about the history of Los Angeles and you have about an hour to spare this weekend, check out this great thread on SkyscraperPage.com.
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthr
There's page after page of amazing old photographs of an almost completely vanished city - an L.A. you've never seen or even imagined before. It's not just informative – it's fun, too! It's quite a trip back through time...
You might like to have a look at my own L.A. history blog, too: "Los Angeles Past."

Don't let anybody tell you Los Angeles doesn't have a history! This just simply isn't true, as you'll see with your own eyes...
Attention! Puppies wanted!

My family is looking for two new additions to our family. We REALLY want puppies. My mom is adamant about it, as am I. We realize we just need dogs in the house and that getting two puppies at one time, preferably littermates, would help prevent separation anxiety and boredom.
So if any of you know of some puppies who will be able to go to their forever homes by early December or mid December please, PLEASE let me know!
We prefer smaller dogs (weighing max 35lbs) with lower than average energy levels. For example, pure terriers are VERY energetic. Our last dog (RIP Osita 10/09/09) was a terrier and we realize we need lazier or low key dogs.
Thanks for any help you can give us.
We may be willing to pay a small adoption fee for each dog providing that they are fixed and/or have their shots.
Anywhere in the Lancaster, Los Angeles, Inland Empire, and Northern Orange County is good for us.
I miss my Osita :'(
We have tried the city animal shelter but had a VERY bad experience. We aren't totally turned away from shelters but we prefer to hand raise the puppies that way we know what their habits and experiences.
Thanks again!

Hi there,
I'm actually not in LA right now (I'm currently in NY, and a member of
newyorkers and know how annoying these out-of-towner posts can be, so my apologies.)
I actually have a pretty specific question. I recently spilled milk into my Macbook. It's under Applecare, but the Apple store here said because of the liquid damage, it would be about $800 to repair. Holy moses.
So, through some googling, I found a place in LA called Macadamia (http://www.macadamia.us/) that will do a spill clean up for $185 and if that doesn't work it's free and they'll fix the computer for a low cost.
Seems like a great deal and when I spoke to the guy on the phone, he seemed on the up and up, but since I don't see a large web presence nor a Yelp page, just wanted to check and see if anyone on LJ had any information. Have you used this shop or hear from anyone who has?
They mentioned on the phone that the address is "1335 North La Brea Ave, Los Angeles."
Thanks for any help you can give!
And if you all ever need any New York type questions answered, consider me your gal!

Dear LJ Community,
Where is the best place for pupusas in L.A.?! I have been craving one for forever and heard good things about Atlacatl on Beverly... thoughts and suggestions?
This said, however, I think I have lost my mind.
I can almost swear that I've had pupusas with cheese and chicken before, once at an event catered and at Self Help Graphics in East L.A., and once at a pupuseria down in Bell a couple of years ago. I know that isn't how they're usually made and are usually with cheese and pork.
Did I imagine this? Even if inauthentic, are there places that make cheese/chicken pupusas in L.A.? I am quite curious to know!

I would like a recommendation for a local optometrist in Goleta or Santa Barbara. For several years I've been driving to my hometown - two and a half hours away - to see my optometrist of 15+ years, but it's too big of a hassle now that I'm an 8 to 5 girl. A name and a brief statement of why you like, or dislike, a local optometrist would be most fabulous. Thanks!

reworked a muffin recipe because i want to make sure i put good ones in the book i'm working on. this one ended up being fantastic. they are apple cinnamon muffins and ended up much better than the ones i made around a week ago.

looking for a personal trainer

Does anybody have any recommendations for a personal trainer? I'm, quite frankly, fat, and I'm finally at that point in my life where I feel I can actually do something about it (meaning, I feel like I can stick with it and not slack off). I'd like to work with a personal trainer. I did have one at my local LA Fitness but I was turned off to her by her attitude.
I'm willing to drive to the valley for a good recommendation (I'm in West LA). I'm also willing to switch gyms if need be :)

i've been working till 830 most nights since august, with a rare exception here and there..a half a week or so every month to catchmybreath before i go back under the water.
tonight it was really coming to a head, the rush before a meeting (i leave sunday for two full days in seattle), and i have been a little down the past week or so as a result of the stress and fatigue and rude dudes at work.
it turns out casey knew just what to do!

yes, i have an 18-pack mini-cupcake sampler all to myself from my favorite cupcake boutique, crumbs!
just a note: if you find yourself here in los angeles, do not be fooled by the hype surrounding the notorious sprinkles. two blocks down santa monica, you will find the just-as-delicious-but-without-all-the-sn obbery-or-thirty-minute-wait bake shop, crumbs. lucky for me, you can forego the beverly hills locat all together and hit the new shop on larchmont!
or you could just come visit me and i'll share some of mine
..maybe.

Yesterday, my hebrew tutor choked on his own phlegm while trying to pronounce something (HA!) and I prank called Taylor Lautner. You wish you were me.

The problem with LJ: we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other. So I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away.
Or feel free to ask me to take pictures of things in my life.

Also, my accessories - I have my signature pieces made for me, and wear them all at the same time or not at all. If I have a business meeting I may not wear any accessories other than overstated cuff links. Any accessory must be a focal point, and really say something.

Most cherished item?
My vanilla colored vintage motorcycle jacket.
The first thing I look at in another Sartorialist's outfit...

Most underrated item in menswear/womenswear?
The perfect scarf. For a man or woman an ascot (or silk scarf) if styled properly can be the sexiest part of an outfit. For me scarves are essential whether they are knitted in the winter, or lighter in the summer - they create an interesting concept.

Proportion for me...
Is playing with positive and negative. I combine really skinny with big, or short with long. No matter what proportion I am playing with there is always a juxtaposition of the two halves. The pieces have to complement each other, otherwise you look like you are wearing part of someone else's outfit.
I always break this fashion rule…
Wearing loose fitting DB jackets unbuttoned.
I never break this fashion rule.

i got cast in a movie, which is pretty strange. not a big movie, but a movie. i'm really excited, and i'm getting payed for about two weeks of work what i make in about eight months. so that doesn't hurt.
i'm also getting payed to attend to oscars, which is wonderful. i love my job.
i've got a bunch of work being hung in this show...

it's getting reviewed by an LA Times art critic, and this is potentially huge for me. my stomach is in knots thinking about it and i'm having a lot of fun finishing my pieces. it's the first time in a while i've felt proud enough of something i've done to share it with others. i went to the gallery space yesterday and it's way bigger than i imagined. so nervous.
on top of all this, i got a phone call from an LAPD detective that the dudes who robbed me were arrested for whatever reason including a fight they were involved in and holding up a 7-11 and they recovered my old phone, although the screen is fucked and it serves no purpose now.
karma, you've done me well.

I've been taking the 10 E to work and 10 W from work for two years from West LA to Downtown and one thing has always been consistent - home in 25 minutes. For the past two weeks, it's been more like an hour. And in the mornings, it's usually an extra 10-15 minutes. I even went on Venice from La Cienega one day and it was just as choked. I know that there's the normal school rush in September, but I am stumped over the recent traffic.

Where can I buy tire chains or cables? I suppose the dealership might have them but do any of the auto stores carry them?
Also, for those of you that have driven to Yosemite in the winter I have a question. I drive an 08' Honda Civic two-door. It's a great car but there's a major flaw, it's so damn low to the ground. I can't drive some streets because the dips in the road make the bottom of my car hit the street. Could I drive my car to Yosemite and not worry...especially if there's a snowstorm?
I don't know where else to post this, sorry if it seems very off topic for LA.
